A Word From the Rabbi

Dear Friends,

This Shabbat carries the name “Shabbat Nachamu” the Shabbat of comfort following the 9th of Av, the day of destruction of the Beit Hamikdosh. Unfortunately, this week we have seen destruction once again of Jewish communities in Gush Katif, their shuls, Jewish schools, cemeteries, and devastating thousands of Jewish lives. It is certainly a time that we request of the Almighty “Nachamu Nachamu Ami” – give us that comfort!

The Lubavitcher Rebbe, of blessed memory, would often encourage utilizing times of challenge to strengthen ourselves in the study of Torah, increasing in the giving of charity, and adding tefillah [prayer], for example, an additional chapter of tehillim [psalms] for the sake of Israel. Childrens' prayers are of special significance, as King David teaches in Tehillim, “mipi oililim v'yonkim yesadita oz” – "out of the mouths of babes and sucklings You have established mght, to counter Your enemies, to silence foe and avenger."

We are told that we have a mission to transform all negative into positive, darkness into light. Rather than simply talking about the catastrophic events of this past week, let us act upon it in a positive way, strengthening ourselves with positive energies. In the merit of tzedakah/charity may we see the materialization of the Talmudic teaching “Gedolah tzedakah shemikarevet et haGeulah” great is charity which brings closer the Redemption. May we see the ultimate comfort with the coming of Moshiach!

Best wishes for a Shabbat Shalom,
Rabbi Zalman Wolowik

Daily Thought
Light Power

All that came into being...

...all the created worlds and all the ethereal entities that live in them, even the worlds that are mere emanations without tangible substance, even the worlds of thought and beyond to the realms of infinite light that preceded Creation...

--all this came to be only as a result of the thought of you, the earthly being, struggling in a world that only a infinitesimal glimmer of G‑dliness has reached in its purity, bringing light where light could not be.

And so it follows, that with one simple act of beauty, all those worlds and angels and realms of light become liberated and elevated and reciprocate with a burst of illumination into our lowly world.

That is why the entire creation can be transformed with one simple, sincere deed.

Never underestimate the power of light.

The Parshah In a Nutshell
Parshat Va'etchanan

Moses tells the people of Israel how he implored G‑d to allow him to enter the land of Israel, but G‑d refused, instructing him instead to ascend a mountain and see the Promised Land.

Continuing his "review of the Torah," Moses describes the Exodus from Egypt and the Giving of the Torah, declaring them unprecedented events in human history. "Has there ever occurred this great thing, or has the likes of it ever been heard? Did ever a people hear the voice of G‑d speaking out of the midst of the fire...and live? ... You were shown, to know, that G‑d is the G‑d... there is none else beside Him."

Moses predicts that, in future generations, the people will turn away from G‑d, worship idols, and be exiled from their land and scattered amongst the nations; but from there they will seek G‑d, and return to obey His commandments.

Our Parshah also includes a repetition of the Ten Commandments, and the verses of the Shmah which declare the fundamentals of the Jewish faith: the unity of G‑d ("Hear O Israel: G‑d our G‑d, G‑d is one"); the mitzvot to love G‑d, study His Torah, and bind "these words" as tefillin on our arm and head and inscribe them in the mezuzot affixed on the doorposts of our home.
