A Word From the Rabbi

Notwithstanding the storm and treacherous road conditions this past Sunday, over 400 people came out to celebrate Chabad's Annual Dinner and salute our worthy honorees! The honorees and I were touched by all who made the effort to join us on that night and truly appreciate the thoughtfulness of the many who submitted journal ads and contributions over the last several weeks. It's been most encouraging to see that our community and friends value and appreciate the vital work carried out by the Chabad Center.

I would also like to express our overwhelming gratitude to the guest of honor, the dinner chairmen, committee and countless volunteers for their tireless efforts in making the dinner the tremendous success it was.

Our thoughts are with our honoree, Mrs. Elyse Goldstein and her family who are mourning the loss of her dear father this week. May G‑d comfort Elyse and her family and may we merit to only share good news & happy occasions with each other in the future. (Shiva & contact information can be found on the sidebar of this email).

I encourage you to view photos of the dinner on our website, http://www.chabad5towns.com/album. I'm sure you'll enjoy them!

Best wishes for a Shabbat Shalom,
Rabbi Zalman Wolowik

Feb. 21 - 23: Winter Camp
Warning: Children without school and weather that makes it too cold to play outside can directly lead to “Mom, I'm bored.” Fear not, concerned parents, Chabad of the Five Towns has the answer for you: Camp Gan Israel's Winter Day Camp.

During President's Week, from February 21 through the 23, Chabad presents a mini-version of its exciting day camp for boys and girls ages 5-10. We even provide hot lunches too - all for just $25 a day!

Camp begins each day at 10:00 a.m. and finishes at 3:00 p.m. and takes place at the Jean Fischman Chabad Center, 74 Maple Avenue in Cedarhurst. Call 516-295-2478 x19 to learn more or to sign up. To view photos of last year's fun, check out http://www.chabadfivetowns.com/.

The Kosher Komic comes to Chabad

Click here for more infoSurely you've heard by now about Ayelet, the Kosher Komic. Her “kosher” CDs and appearances have caused quite a stir. What is “kosher” comedy you may ask? It involves comedy that is not offensive but still makes us laugh. The popular Kosher Komic fine-tunes her performances to create an invigorating show where women enjoy a good bout of comic relief with her hilarious routines on various aspects of Jewish life from dating & marriage to airlines and diets.

Ayelet can't be seen in the major comedy clubs in the city due to her modest nature. But she can be seen at the Chabad of the Five Towns, 74 Maple Avenue, on March 6 starting at 8:15 p.m. The event is for women and girls only and tickets are required. Purchase your tickets by calling 516-295-2478 ext. 10 or online at http://www.chabad5towns.com/.

A basic ticket is $15 and a sponsor ticket for preferred seating is $36. To learn more about Ayelet's “Long Journey Home” visit her website at http://www.kosherkomedy.com/.

Inner Engravings

Upon every person's soul there are words written and words engraved.

The words that are written are not of the essence of the person—they come to the soul from the outside. Therefore, they may fade and fall away, perhaps to be replaced by other words.

The words engraved are of the soul itself—just as engravings are no more than the form of the stone. When the soul finds quietude, those words are there. And when the soul is in turmoil, or soiled by experience, those engravings need only be cleaned and uncovered. But they can never be torn away.

Those words engraved upon your soul, they are also engraved in a holy fire within the depths of the Soul of All Things. They are the same words that Moses heard and inscribed on stone and on parchment. And at times, when you immerse in the Torah and the words of its sages, and you allow it entry to touch your soul, you may hear those words resonating inside.

The Parshah In a Nutshell
Parshat Yitro

Moses' father-in-law, Jethro, hears of the great miracles which G‑d performed for the people of Israel, and comes from Midian to the Israelite camp, bringing with him Moses' wife and two sons. Jethro advises Moses to appoint a hierarchy of magistrates and judges to assist him in the task of governing and administrating justice to the people.

The Children of Israel camp opposite Mount Sinai, where they are told that G‑d has chosen them to be His "kingdom of priests" and "holy nation." The people respond by proclaiming, "All that G‑d has spoken, we shall do."

On the sixth day of the third month (Sivan), seven weeks after the Exodus, the entire nation of Israel assembles at the foot of Mount Sinai. G‑d descends on the mountain amidst thunder, lightening, billows of smoke and the blast of the shofar, and summons Moses to ascend.

G‑d proclaims the Ten Commandments, commanding the people of Israel to believe in G‑d, not to worship idols or take G‑d's name in vain, to keep the Shabbat, honor their parents, and not to murder, commit adultery, steal, bear false witness or covet another's property. The people cry out to Moses that the revelation is too intense for them to bear, begging him to receive the Torah from G‑d and convey it to them.
