A Word From the Rabbi

Pesach at Chabad was truly beautiful!! All who attended the Seder had a most enjoyable and meaningful experience and many had the opportunity to share a thought in connection with the Seder. People from all walks of life attended services throughout Pesach and scores of participants in yesterday's Moshiach Seudah went home with an uplifting message from Rabbi Heshy Epstein, to utilize the energies of Pesach to constantly grow and increase in acts of Torah and Mitzvot and to never be satisfied with our past achievements. This message was especially timely as we focused on the final day of Pesach as it relates to the final redemption with the coming of Moshiach! May our joint acts of goodness and kindness tip the scale and bring about the ultimate Redemption speedily in our days!

This interactive course to begin Wednesday, May 5th, promises to intrigue and inspire as you explore the history and development of Jewish law & tradition. "From Sinai to Cyberspace: How Ancient Wisdom guides a Modern World."

A lot can change in 3,000 years. We’ve gone from camel backs to Cadillacs, and have entered a world of fast-paced technological advance. We’ve gone from a Jewish world marked by prophets and pilgrimages to a world where students study Torah in cyber-classrooms and rabbis address ethical questions brought about by organ transplants.

Yet the elemental questions about our tradition remain the same and the answers to these questions are addressed in From Sinai to Cyberspace, the most popular course ever offered by the Jewish Learning Institute. Sign up today at http://www.myjli.com/ or call: 516-295-2478.

Daily Quote
Moses received the Torah from Sinai and gave it over to Joshua. Joshua gave it over to the Elders, the Elders to the Prophets, and the Prophets gave it over to the Men of the Great Assembly. They would say three things: Be cautious in judgement; establish many pupils; make a safety fence around the Torah...

The Parshah In a Nutshell
Parshat Shemini

On the eighth day following "seven days of inauguration," Aaron and his sons begin to officiate as Kohanim (priests); a fire issues forth from G‑d to consume the offerings on the Altar and the Divine Presence comes to dwell in the Sanctuary.

Aaron's two elder sons, Nadav and Avihu, offer a "strange fire before G‑d, which He commanded them not" and die before G‑d. Aaron is silent in face of his tragedy. Moses and Aaron subsequently disagree as to a point of law regarding the offerings, but Moses concedes to Aaron that Aaron is in the right.

G‑d commands the kosher laws, identifying the animal species permissible and forbidden for consumption. Land animals may be eaten only if they have split hooves and also chew their cud; fish must have fins and scales; a list of non-kosher birds is given, and a list of kosher insects (four types of locusts).

Also in Shemini are some of the laws of ritual purity, including the purifying power of the mikvah (a pool of water meeting specified qualifications) and the wellspring. Thus the people of Israel are enjoined to "differentiate between the impure and the pure."

Daily Thought: THE PUZZLE

Think of your world as a massive jigsaw puzzle in time and three dimensions. All the objects and events are meant to fit together neatly, yet they seem just a heap of dysfunctional fragments.

Here is the trick to reassembling those fragments: Find your own purpose first and start moving headstrong towards it. Once in that mode, all things related to your purpose will find you. And those things already attached to you will find their place as well. Suddenly, where once noise and chaos tore you in a thousand directions, a great symphony occurs.
