A Word From the Rabbi

I am writing this email to you from Brooklyn, as I join my many colleagues and friends at our annual international convention at the Lubavitch World Headquarters. It is so very encouraging and heartwarming to spend the weekend with thousands of Chabad Rabbis from around the globe. I'm attending workshops with Shluchim from Vietnam, Turkey and the Congo, hearing words of inspiration from emissaries in Israel & the Former Soviet Union and participating in round-table discussions on the Jewish Learning Institute, the Friendship Circle and many other topics with Chabad Rabbis from across the US and worldwide.

It is a weekend of gaining renewed strength and energy to continue the mission the Lubavitcher Rebbe OBM has empowered us to do, to bring Jews closer to their Jewish roots and make the world a better place, thus hastening the coming of Moshiach.

By attending this convention, we can all feel and see how the Rebbe's work is alive and increasing rapidly throughout the world through the dedication of his emissaries, the Chabad emissaries around the globe. It is truly uplifting! I encourage you to read a special article on our website, entitled "The Emissaries" about the Rebbe's vision to change the world... it is fascinating!

Also, this Sunday tune it at 5 pm - the annual banquet culminating the convention will be streaming live on our website! Tune in to be a part of a remarkably extraordinary evening like none other! With over 2,000 Chabad Rabbis along with hundreds of friends and partners of Chabad worldwide. A link will be posted on our homepage on Sunday morning: http://www.chabad5towns.com/.

Best wishes for a Shabbat Shalom & a Good Chodesh,
Rabbi Zalman Wolowik

Question
Is G‑d an Agnostic?
I think G‑d is also agnostic. He sits there perpetually wondering whether He exists or does not exist. Out of His questioning, a whole world is generated—with beings like us that go around asking, "Is this for real, or what?"

Daily Thought
The Signature

When He had finished His world, complete and whole, each thing in its place, the earth below and the heavens beyond; Then, like an artist, he signed His holy name. With a vacuum in time, so that the Infinite Light could kiss the finite world and enter within. And He called it Shabbat.

In each thing there is a Shabbat, an opening that allows life to enter, a desire to receive from Beyond. In each being there is a sense of wonder, of knowing that there is something greater. Transcendent. Something it will never truly know. And with that perception it receives life.

The Parshah In a Nutshell
Parshat Chayei Sarah

Sarah dies at age 127 and is buried in the Machpeilah Cave in Hebron, which Abraham purchases from Ephron the Hittite for 400 shekels of silver.

Abraham's servant, Eliezer, is sent laden with gifts to Charan to find a wife for Isaac. At the village well, Eliezer asks G‑d for a sign: when the maidens come to the well, he will ask for some water to drink; the woman who will offer to give his camels to drink as well, shall be the one destined for his master's son.

Rebecca, the daughter of Abraham's nephew Bethuel, appears at the well and passes the "test". Eliezer is invited to their home, where he repeats the story of the day's events. Rebecca returns with Eliezer to the land of Canaan, where they encounter Isaac praying in the field. Isaac marries Rebecca, loves her, and is comforted over the loss of his mother.

Abraham takes a new wife, Keturah (Hagar) and fathers six additional sons, but Isaac is designated as his only heir. Abraham dies at age 175 and is buried beside Sarah by his two eldest sons, Isaac and Ishmael.
