A Word From the Rabbi

This coming Sunday we celebrate Lag B'Omer, the 33rd day of the Omer count, which corresponds to the 18th day of Iyar. On this day we observe the passing of the great sage and mystic, Rabbi Shimon Bar Yochai also known as “Rashbi”.

Following his request that this day forever be one of joy and celebration, thousands flock to his resting place in Meiron, Israel on Lag B'Omer to celebrate this day and grand celebrations are held in communities worldwide such as the Family Fun Day in Cedarhurst Park this Sunday, 5:30 – 8:30 pm.

Rabbi Shimon Bar Yochai is known as the author of the Zohar – the source of Jewish Mysticism which sheds light onto all the Torah’s teachings.  Therefore, in addition to celebrating Lag B'Omer in Cedarhurst Park on Sunday as a community, it is an opportune time to increase or enhance your Torah Studies.

Here at Chabad, we make it most convenient and accessible with a wide range of 25 classes offered weekly for men and women, including mystical classes such as the study of Tanya.  There’s no better time than now to take advantage of this incredible resource, free of charge, and join the class that suits your interests and busy schedule.  Visit our website to learn more about our classes and teachers.

Best wishes for a Shabbat Shalom,
Rabbi Shneur Z. Wolowik

Daily Quote
It is written, "For you (the people of Israel) shall be a desirable land, says G‑d" (Malachi 3:12). Just as the greatest explorers will never uncover the limits of the great and valuable resources which the Almighty has placed within the earth, neither will anyone ever discover the limits of the great treasures which lie buried within a Jew — G‑d's "desirable land."

Lag BaOmer
Bow and Arrow
On the whole, this is how we conduct our lives: when something faces us, we grab hold of something else — a telephone, a wallet, a gun — with which to deal with the situation. But there comes a point at which the external resources on which we've come to rely are suddenly ineffectual, and the only place to turn is inward, to ourselves

Daily Thought
The Mandate

The mandate of the whole of Creation is stated almost immediately. They translate it as "Let there be light". Instead, read, "It should become Light".

Meaning that all the world —even the darkness— should become a source of light and wisdom.

The Parshah In a Nutshell
Parshat Emor

The Torah section of Emor ("Speak") begins with the special laws pertaining to the Kohanim ("priests"), the Kohen Gadol ("High Priest"), and the Temple service: A Kohen may not become ritually impure through contact with a dead body, save on the occasion of the death of a close relative. A Kohen may not marry a divorcee or a woman with a promiscuous past; a Kohen Gadol can marry only a virgin. A Kohen with a physical deformity cannot serve in the Holy Temple, nor can a deformed animal be brought as an offering.

A newborn calf, lamb, or kid must be left with its mother for seven days; one may not slaughter an animal and its offspring on the same day.

The second part of Emor lists the annual Callings of Holiness — the festivals of the Jewish calendar: the weekly Shabbat; the bringing of the Passover offering on 14 Nissan; the seven-day Passover festival beginning on 15 Nissan; the bringing of the Omer offering from the first barley harvest on the 2nd day of Passover, and the commencement, on that day, of the 49-day Counting of the Omer, culminating in the festival of Shavuot on the 50th day; a "remembrance of shofar blowing" on 1 Tishrei; a solemn fast day on 10 Tishrei; the Sukkot festival — during which we are to dwell in huts for seven days and take the "Four Kinds" — beginning on 15 Tishrei; and the immediately following holiday of the "8th day" of Sukkot (Shemini Atzeret.

Next the Torah discusses the lighting of the Menorah in the Temple, and the showbread (Lechem Hapanim) placed weekly on the table there.

Emor concludes with the incident of a man executed for blasphemy, and the penalties for murder (death) and for injuring one's fellow or destroying his property (monetary compensation).
