A Word From the Rabbi

I am writing this email to you as I join my many colleagues and friends at our annual international convention at the Lubavitch World Headquarters in Brooklyn. It is encouraging and heartwarming to spend the weekend with thousands of Chabad Rabbis from around the world. It is a weekend of gaining renewed strength and energy to continue the mission the Lubavitcher Rebbe OBM has empowered us to do, to bring Jews closer to their Jewish roots, thus hastening the coming of Moshiach. By attending this convention, we can all feel and see how the Rebbe's work is alive and increasing rapidly throughout the world through the dedication of his emissaries, the Chabad emissaries around the globe. It is truly uplifting!

Click to read articleI invite you to tune in this Sunday at 5 pm - the annual gala banquet culminating the convention will be streaming live on our website! Tune in to be a part of a remarkably extraordinary evening like none other - with over 2,000 Chabad Rabbis and over 1,000 friends and partners of Chabad worldwide. The live broadcast will be available at this link on Sunday: Live Broadcast.

On another note, on behalf of all who enjoyed the fabulous Shabbaton activities and programs offered by Chabad last Shabbos, I would like to thank our co-sponsors whose generous support helped make this Shabbaton possible and our dedicated staff and volunteers who worked countless hours to make the Shabbaton a success!

Best wishes for a Shabbat Shalom and Good Chodesh,

Rabbi Zalman Wolowik

Authentic Humility

Humility has to be real. Real humility means transcendence of the self.

Moses, it is written, was the most humble of all men.

Obviously, he knew who he was. He knew that he was chosen to accomplish the greatest tasks of history. He was the loftiest of all prophets, who spoke directly to G‑d whenever he wished. He knew all this and yet he was humble.

Because Moses told himself, "This is not my own achievement. This is what I have done with the powers G‑d has granted me. Perhaps had someone else been given these same powers, perhaps that someone else would have done a better job."

the parshah in a nutshell
Parshat Chayei Sarah

Sarah dies at age 127 and is buried in the Machpeilah Cave in Hebron, which Abraham purchases from Ephron the Hittite for 400 shekels of silver.

Abraham's servant, Eliezer, is sent laden with gifts to Charan to find a wife for Isaac. At the village well, Eliezer asks G‑d for a sign: when the maidens come to the well, he will ask for some water to drink; the woman who will offer to give his camels to drink as well, shall be the one destined for his master's son.

Rebecca, the daughter of Abraham's nephew Bethuel, appears at the well and passes the "test". Eliezer is invited to their home, where he repeats the story of the day's events. Rebecca returns with Eliezer to the land of Canaan, where they encounter Isaac praying in the field. Isaac marries Rebecca, loves her, and is comforted over the loss of his mother.

Abraham takes a new wife, Keturah (Hagar) and fathers six additional sons, but Isaac is designated as his only heir. Abraham dies at age 175 and is buried beside Sarah by his two eldest sons, Isaac and Ishmael.
