A Word From the Rabbi

This past Tuesday, scores of people from our community joined the hundreds of men and women from 45 Chabad Centers of the tri-state area for a special Evening of Tribute to the Lubavitcher Rebbe, OBM. The event was held at Ohel Chabad, (the visitor complex adjacent to the Rebbe's gravesite) and included inspirational speeches, stories and song.

The program began with MC Rabbi Pesach Schmerling from Chabad of Far Rockaway introducing Cantor Zalman Baumgarten who sang heartwarming traditional Chabad melodies. Rabbi Yosef Jacobson led the keynote address on the greatness and care of the Rebbe and how he looked up to each and every Jew. He proceeded to tell wonderful stories about individuals touched by the Rebbe. After the Rabbi spoke, participants enjoyed a moving video, which portrayed how the Rebbe never rested and never allowed us to rest or become complacent in areas of Torah and mitzvot. The crowd was visibly inspired by the speakers and video presentations.

On a different note, the day of passing of a holy tzadik is an auspicious day to reflect and bond with the tzadik's soul and to ask the tzadik to intercede on High on our behalf. Therefore, the day of the Rebbe's passing, Sunday, July 6, 3 Tammuz is an opportune time to pray at the Ohel, the Rebbe's resting place in Queens. Click here for directions.

If you can't make it in person, I will be at the Ohel on this day together with some tens of thousands of other people from around the world and I would like to pray for you as well at the Rebbe's "Ohel." If you send me your name and mother's name (preferably the Hebrew or Yiddish names), and those of anyone else you would like me to mention, I would be glad to have them in mind as well. If there's a specific need you would like me to pray for, please mention it as well - you can send the names to me by responding to this email. May all our prayers be fulfilled.

Best wishes for a Shabbat Shalom and Good Chodesh,

Rabbi Zalman Wolowik

Daily Quote
The life of a tzaddik is not a physical life, but a life consisting wholly of faith, awe, and love of G‑d... While the tzaddik was alive on earth, his disciples received but a reflection of these attributes, a ray radiating beyond this vessel by means of his holy utterances and thoughts... But after his passing... whoever is close to him can receive a [far loftier dimension] of these three attributes, since they are no longer confined within a [material] vessel, nor bounded by physical space...

Can G‑d Create a Rock That's Too Heavy for Him to Lift?
You see a ray of light from the sun shining in through your window. "Where did you come from?" you ask. It answers, of course, that it came from the sun. So you ask it, "Let me see what you look like as you are in your source within the sun..."

The Passing of a Tzaddik
Torah expects a Tzaddik to not be satisfied with his own righteousness; his mission is to influence his fellow Jews to follow G‑d’s path, and to help them, in turn, become sources of inspiration to others as well.

Daily Thought
A Point Within

Within each of us is a point where all of us meet. And within that point is a place where we are all one simple essence. That is the soul of the moshiach within us.

If so, the person who we will call the moshiach does not need to convince us to follow. He only needs to awaken that sleeping moshiach within each of us. And then we will look and say, "I know this tzadik. He is the spark I feel awake within me."

That is when we will all be liberated we and all the creation.

the parshah in a nutshell
Parshat Chukat

Moses is taught the laws of the Red Heifer, whose ashes purify a person who has been contaminated by contact with a dead body.

After 40 years of journeying through the desert, the people of Israel arrive in the wilderness of Zin. Miriam dies and the people thirst for water. G‑d tells Moses to speak to a rock and command it to give water. Moses gets angry at the rebellious Israelites and strikes the stone. Water issues forth, but Moses is told by G‑d that neither he nor Aaron will enter the Promised Land.

Aaron dies at Har Hahar and is succeeded in the High Priesthood by his son Elazar. Venomous snakes attack the Israelite camp after yet another eruption of discontent in which the people "speak against G‑d and Moses"; G‑d tells Moses to place a brass serpent upon a high pole, and all who will gaze heavenward will be healed. The people sing a song in honor of the miraculous well that provided the water in the desert.

Moses leads the people in battles against the Emorite kings Sichon and Og (who seek to prevent Israel's passage through their territory) and conquers their lands, which lie east of the Jordan.
