A Word From the Rabbi

Dear Friends,

Several hundred people participated in an invigorating tribute dinner this past Sunday as all 24 Chabad Centers on the Island joined together at the Huntington Town House to observe the 11th Yartzeit of the Lubavticher Rebbe OBM. Following a mini-academic conference, Rabbi Moshe Kotlarsky, chairman of the international conference of Shluchim, inspired the crowd to carry on the Rebbe’s legacy with particular focus on the way the Rebbe reached out with special concern for each and every Jew. Rabbi Kotlarsky brought this credo to life as he shared meaningful stories detailing how the Rebbe sent him across the world to help various individuals, families and communities.

Noted lectured and Kabbalistic expert, Mrs. Chaya Franklin leads this three part series on “Parallel Universes and Life on Earth: Kabbalistic insights and interpretations on various topics especially relevant to women.” The upcoming workshop on July 18th will focus on "Seasons of the Soul: The Kabbalistic appraoch to the Jewish life cycle." The workshop will take place at Chabad, Monday evening, 8:15 pm. Suggested donation: $10 per class, $25 for the series.

Farbrengens create a warm and vibrant sense of community and are an enjoyable and effective way to communicate Chassidic ideas and ideals. Chabad will be hosting a farbrengen for men this week, Tuesday evening, July 19th, in honor of 12-13 Tammuz, marking the birthday and day the previous Lubavitcher Rebbe was released from his imprisonment (in 1927, for spreading Judaism, despite Communist restrictions) The farbrengen will be held at Chabad, 74 Maple Avenue at 8:15 pm.

Our calendar ad deadline has been extended for just one more week! Our calendar will be viewed by over 20,000 people in the coming year and is a great investment for your advertising dollars. The Fragile Veneer of Evil
On the one hand, he's declared to be nothing less than the equal of Abraham (in passion) and Moses (in prophecy); on the other, he's described as the most perverse, greedy and corrupt human being ever to walk the face of the earth!

The Parshah In a Nutshell
Parshat Balak

Balak, the King of Moab, summons the prophet Balaam to curse the people of Israel. On the way, Balaam is berated by his ass, who sees the angel that G‑d sends to block their way before Balaam does. Three times, from three different vantage points, Balaam attempts to pronounce his curses; each time, blessings issue instead. Balaam also prophesies on the end of the days and the coming of Moshiach.

The people fall prey to the charms of the daughters of Moab and are enticed to worship the idol Peor. When a high-ranking Israelite official publicly takes a Midianite princess into a tent, Pinchas kills them both, stopping the plague raging among the people.

Daily Thought: Self Trial

The Baal Shem Tov taught that in the heavenly court there is no one who can judge you for what you have done in your life on earth. So this is what they do:

They show you someone's life -all the achievements and all the failures, all the right decisions and all the wrongdoings -and then they ask you, “So what should we do with this somebody?”

And you give your verdict. Which they accept. And then they tell you that this somebody was you. Being now in heaven, you don't recall a thing.

Of course, those who tend to judge others favorably have a decided advantage. Better get in the habit now.

From the wisdom of the Lubavitcher Rebbe
