A Word from the Rabbi

Dear Friends,

After such a meaningful Rosh Hashana, I’d like to express our gratitude to HAFTR High School on behalf of the hundreds of adults and children who have benefited from Rosh Hashana Services & youth programs. I’d also like to thank the honorable Mayor Parisi and the Village of Cedarhurst for granting the approval for the use of HAFTR, enabling all to experience enjoyable and comfortable Rosh Hashana & Yom Kippur Service.

Additionally, I thank our Chazzanim, Gaboim, Youth Directors and staff, for enhancing the services. We’re truly grateful to Dr. Muller and all who participated in the purchase of aliyot, thus enabling Chabad to continue its vital work and expand its reach in the Five Towns.

May the Almighty grant that all our prayers be materialized in full and may this year be the year of redemption with the coming of the righteous Moshiach.

Best wishes for a Shabbat Shalom & Shana Tova,
Rabbi Zalman Wolowik

Daily Thought
Getting Ahead With Failure

There is only one thing that can put you further ahead than success, and that is surviving failure.

When you are successful, you are whole and complete. That is wonderful, but you cannot break out beyond your own universe.

When you fail, you are broken. You look at the pieces of yourself lying on the ground and say, "This is worthless."

Now you can escape. The shell is broken, the shell of a created being. Now you can grow to join the Infinite.

The Parshah In a Nutshell
Parshat Vayelech

The Parshah of Vayelech ("And He Went") recounts the events on Moses' last day of earthly life. "I am one hundred and twenty years old today," he says to the people, "and I can no longer go forth and come in." He transfers the leadership to Joshua, and writes (or concludes writing) the Torah in a scroll which he entrusts to the Levites for safekeeping in the Ark of the Covenant.

The mitzvah of Hak'hel ("Gather") is given: every seven years, during the festival of Sukkot of the first year of the shemittah cycle, the entire people of Israel — men, women and children — should gather at the Holy Temple in Jerusalem, where the king should read to them from the Torah.

Vayelech concludes with the prediction that the people of Israel will turn away from their covenant with G‑d causing Him to hide His face from them, but also with the promise that the words of the Torah "shall not be forgotten out of the mouths of their descendants."
