A Word from the Rabbi

I am writing this email to you from Brooklyn , as I join my many colleagues and friends at our annual international convention at the Lubavitch World Headquarters. It is so very encouraging and heartwarming to spend the weekend with thousands of Chabad Rabbis from around the globe. I'm attending workshops with Shluchim from Singapore, Siberia and Alaska, hearing words of inspiration from emissaries in Tunisia & Croatia, listening to first-hand acccounts of Chabad's humanitarian efforts from Chabad delegates in Florida, New Orleans and Thailand and participating in round-table discussions with Chabad Rabbis from across the US and worldwide.

It is a weekend of gaining renewed strength and energy to continue the mission the Lubavitcher Rebbe OBM has empowered us to do, to bring Jews closer to their Jewish roots, thus hastening the coming of Moshiach.

By attending this convention, we can all feel and see how the Rebbe's work is alive and increasing rapidly throughout the world through the dedication of his emissaries, the Chabad emissaries around the globe. It is truly uplifting! I encourage you to read a special article on our website, entitled "The Emissaries" about the Rebbe's vision to change the world... it is fascinating!

Best wishes for a Shabbat Shalom,
Rabbi Zalman Wolowik

Daily Thought
True Belief

(From a letter by the Rebbe:)

I do not accept your assertion that you do not believe. For if you truly had no concept of a Supernal Being Who created the world with purpose, then what is all this outrage of yours against the injustice of life? The substance of the universe is not moral, nor are plants and animals. Why should it surprise you that whoever is bigger and more powerful swallows his fellow alive?

It is only due to an inner conviction in our hearts, shared by every human being, that there is a Judge, that there is right and there is wrong. And so, when we see a wrong, we demand an explanation: Why is this not the way it is supposed to be?

That itself is belief in G‑d.

The Parshah In a Nutshell
Parshat Chayei Sarah

Sarah dies at age 127 and is buried in the Machpeilah Cave in Hebron, which Abraham purchases from Ephron the Hittite for 400 shekels of silver.

Abraham's servant, Eliezer, is sent laden with gifts to Charan to find a wife for Isaac. At the village well, Eliezer asks G‑d for a sign: when the maidens come to the well, he will ask for some water to drink; the woman who will offer to give his camels to drink as well, shall be the one destined for his master's son.

Rebecca, the daughter of Abraham's nephew Bethuel, appears at the well and passes the "test". Eliezer is invited to their home, where he repeats the story of the day's events. Rebecca returns with Eliezer to the land of Canaan, where they encounter Isaac praying in the field. Isaac marries Rebecca, loves her, and is comforted over the loss of his mother.

Abraham takes a new wife, Keturah (Hagar) and fathers six additional sons, but Isaac is designated as his only heir. Abraham dies at age 175 and is buried beside Sarah by his two eldest sons, Isaac and Ishmael.
