Dec. 1: Farbrengen for Men
All men are invited to join in a Chassidic Farbrengen in honor of Rosh Chodesh Kislev, celebrating the Lubavitcher Rebbe's recovery in 1977. Celebrate with us at Chabad tonight, December 1st, 8:15 pm. What's learned at a class or lecture is stored in the mind; what's learned at a Farbrengen is engraved in the heart.

Dec. 3: Birthday Shabbat
This Shabbat is Birthday Shabbat! Is your child celebrating his / her Jewish birthday in the month of Kislev? We'll throw the party in a most meaningful way, celebrating the birthdays of all children born during the coming month. Each child will be given the opportunity to announce his/her resolution of a good deed for the upcoming year. All children are welcome to participate! For further information on birthday Shabbat, please contact Rabbi Meir or click here to verify your child's Jewish Birthday.

Dec. 3: Mother-Daughter Melava Malka
Moms! Enjoy a delightful evening with your daughter(s), ages 5-11! Chabad will be hosting our annual Mother-Daughter Melava Malka this Saturday night, December 3rd, 7:30 – 9:30 pm. The highlights of the evening include a professional entertainer, special craft project and of course, a delicious pizza dinner. Cost: $10 per person, $25 max per family.

Dec. 5: Class for Women with Mrs. Chaya Franklin
Imbue the coming month with spirituality with Mrs. Chaya Franklin's evening class for women on the kabbalistic insight and spiritual powers unique to the month of Kislev. Monday evening, December 5, 8:15 pm @ Chabad.

Dec. 8: Meet the Author
Meet the Author of “The Rebbe's Army”! Join journalist and author, Sue Fishkoff, for a speaking engagement, booksigning and discussions offering objective insights into the world of Chabad-Lubavitch, from her book. “The Rebbe's Army” is an accurate, detailed portrait of the outreach efforts of Chabad, which has become a major movement in American Judaism. "With a critical but appreciative eye, Sue Fishkoff explains why so many secular people have such a warm spot in their hearts for the Chabad movement, and especially for its army of “shaliachs,” says Alan Dershowitz. “A wonderful book about a fascinating group of people.  We can learn much both from the book and from the emissaries about whom she writes." Men & Women are encouraged to join December 8, 8:15 pm at the Chabad Center (note date change).

Reason & Faith

Don't imagine that you can escape faith. Every science, every system of logic, has its axioms. Reason cannot move one step forward without some assumption upon which to base itself.

The Parshah In a Nutshell
Parshat Toldot

Isaac marries Rebecca. After twenty childless years their prayers are answered and Rebecca conceives. She experiences a difficult pregnancy as the "children struggle inside her"; G‑d tells her that "there are two nations in your womb", and that the younger will prevail over the elder.

Esau emerges first; Jacob is born clutching Esau's heel. Esau grows up to be "a cunning hunter, a man of the field"; Jacob is "a wholesome man", a dweller in the tents of learning. Isaac favors Esau; Rebecca loves Jacob. Returning exhausted and hungry from the hunt one day, Esau sells his birthright (his rights as the firstborn) to Jacob for a pot of red lentil stew.

In Gerar, in the land of the Philistines, Isaac presents Rebecca as his sister, out of fear that he will be killed by someone coveting her beauty. He farms the land, reopens the wells dug by his father Abraham, and bores a series of his own wells: over the first two there is strife with the Philistines, but the waters of the third well are enjoyed in tranquility.

Esau marries two Hittite women. Isaac grows old and blind, and expresses his desire to bless Esau before he dies. While Esau goes off to hunt for his father's favorite food, Rebecca dresses Jacob in Esau's clothes, covers his arms and neck with goatskins to simulate the feel of his hairier brother, prepares a similar dish, and sends Jacob to his father. Jacob receives his fathers' blessings for "the dew of the heaven and the fat of the land" and mastery over his brother. When Esau returns and the deception is revealed, all Isaac can do for his weeping son is to predict that he will live by his sword, and that when Jacob falters, the younger brother will forfeit his supremacy over the elder.

Jacob leaves home for Charan to flee Esau's wrath and to find a wife in the family of his mother's brother, Laban. Esau marries a third wife — Machlat, the daughter of Ishmael.
