A Word From the Rabbi

I am happy to share with you that we at Chabad have responded to numerous requests and manufactured our very own Tzedakah (charity) boxes. Over 6,000 pieces were mailed out this week to homes & businesses in our community.

Charity is an act of love, kindness and compassion. It is also a duty, a privilege, a right, an act of justice, a humbling experience (even more for the giver than for the recipient) and a badge of identity. The Tzedakah box enables one always to do this great mitzvah of giving tzedakah, whether it be before lighting Shabbat candles, on any joyous occasion or just spontaneously. It can also help educate children in seeing that giving is a cherished value in Jewish life, that 'charity begins at home' and is not merely a tax deduction handled at work or through the accountant. To learn more about this tremendous mitzvah, click here - we especially recommend the article on "the myth of charity."

Approaching the High Holidays, it is especially important to increase our giving of charity, as we beseech the Al-mighty G‑d to grant us a happy, healthy and sweet new year. In addition, our sages teach that “ain yisroel nigailin ela b'tzedakah” - "charitable acts on our part will bring about the final redemption." Every act of charity hastens the coming of Moshiach, and I therefore encourage you to make the most of this campaign and drop a coin in the can each day – every little bit makes a difference!

Please note that each Chabad Center is supported independently through local contributions from individuals as yourself. Contributing to Chabad via the tzedakah box makes you a partner in Chabad's daily activities in servicing the Five Towns community. Through our joint acts of charity, may we merit to see the ultimate “charity” of the Al-Mighty — a world of peace and harmony with the coming of the righteous Moshiach.

We thank Mr. & Mrs. David & Tammy Friedman for co-sponsoring this campaign in memory of David's father, Rabbi Morris Friedman, R' Shmuel Moshe B”R Yechiel Dov HaKohen, OB"M. Rabbi Friedman was known for his leadership, benevolence and commitment to Jewish education, and it is our honor to dedicate this charity campaign to his memory.

Best wishes for a Shabbat Shalom, a Good Chodesh & Shana Tova!
Rabbi Wolowik

Daily Quote
The ties between two people—and certainly those between a husband and wife, or between parents and children—are chiefly of a spiritual, not of a material, nature. That means that a bullet, a grenade, or a disease can affect the body, but not the spirit or the soul. The physical bond between two persons can be broken by a bullet, but not their spiritual relationship...

Daily Thought
For You

Everyone agrees with all the wonderful advice and ethics written in the books of the sages. Everyone agrees that this is the way to run your life. The only issue each one of us have is whether those words are truly meant for me, or for someone else in another time and another place.

If it is truth, it is meant for you, now, here.

The Parshah In a Nutshell
Parshat Nitzavim-Vayelech

The Parshah of Nitzavim includes some of the most fundamental principles of the Jewish faith:

The unity of Israel: "You stand today, all of you, before the L-rd your G‑d: your heads, your tribes, your elders, your officers, and every Israelite man; your young ones, your wives, the stranger in your gate; from your wood hewer to your water drawer."

The future redemption: Moses warns of the exile and desolation of the Land that will result if Israel abandons G‑d's laws, but then he prophesies that, in the end, "You will return to the L-rd your G‑d... If your outcasts shall be at the ends of the heavens, from there will the L-rd your G‑d gather you... and bring you into the Land which your fathers have possessed."

The practicality of Torah: "For the Mitzvah which I command you this day, it is not beyond you nor is it remote from you. It is not in heaven... It is not across the sea.... Rather, it is very close to you, in your mouth, in your heart, that you may do it."

Freedom of choice: "I have set before you life and goodness, and death and evil; in that I command you this day to love G‑d, to walk in His ways and to keep His commandments... Life and death I have set before you, blessing and curse. And you shall choose life."

The Parshah of Vayelech ("And He Went") recounts the events on Moses' last day of earthly life. "I am one hundred and twenty years old today," he says to the people, "and I can no longer go forth and come in." He transfers the leadership to Joshua, and writes (or concludes writing) the Torah in a scroll which he entrusts to the Levites for safekeeping in the Ark of the Covenant.

The mitzvah of Hak'hel ("Gather") is given: every seven years, during the festival of Sukkot of the first year of the shemittah cycle, the entire people of Israel — men, women and children — should gather at the Holy Temple in Jerusalem, where the king should read to them from the Torah.

Vayelech concludes with the prediction that the people of Israel will turn away from their covenant with G‑d causing Him to hide His face from them, but also with the promise that the words of the Torah "shall not be forgotten out of the mouths of their descendants."
