A Word From the Rabbi

We at Chabad of the Five Towns join you in hope and prayer as together we approach the new Jewish year of 5767. Together we'll listen to the call of the Shofar, taste the sweetness of the Apple-and-Honey, recommit to G‑d on Yom Kippur, unite under the leafy branches of the Sukkah, and rejoice in our heritage on Simchat Torah.

Join us this year to celebrate together in our shul throughout this special month, and before the High Holidays are upon us, check out our incredible website for your pre-holiday preparation! www.Chabad5towns.com/NewYear is a perfect companion and guide to the extraordinary range of traditions, practices and emotions inherent in this festive month.

The megasite includes hundreds of web pages chock full of everything from practical how-to guides, to deep mystical and Talmudic insights, to interactive games and a searchable worldwide database of High Holiday services. Utilizing a variety of advanced web technologies and an elegant design, The Jewish New Year site provides a treasure trove of information for this jam-packed season of the Jewish year.

Approaching the High Holidays is also an auspicious time to pray at the resting place of the righteous to intercede on our behalf, beseeching G‑d to grant us all a wonderful year. I will, therefore, be at the Rebbe's resting place in Queens together with some tens of thousands of other people from around the world. I would like to pray for you, as well, at the Rebbe's "Ohel." If you send me your name and mother's name (preferably the Hebrew or Yiddish names), and those of anyone else you would like me to mention, I would be glad to have them in mind as well. If there's a specific need you would like me to pray for, please mention it as well. Respond to this email with your information or if you prefer, you can fax the names to 718-723-4444, or bring your letter to the Chabad Center before Friday.

At the close of the year 5766, I take this opportunity to thank all our supporters, staff and volunteers who have helped us out throughout the year. This past year's success is thanks to you!

Wishing you and yours a happy, healthy sweet New Year and may we all be inscribed in the book of life, peace and prosperity!

Best wishes for a Shabbat Shalom & Shana Tova!

Partner with Chabad!

Last year we embarked on an active partnership/membership drive to help increase our partnership family. This will make us stronger as a group, as well as help place our shul on stronger financial footings. The stronger we become the more we can offer our community in terms of programs and services. Plus, with every new family, more and more of our fellow Jews will be enjoying the Chabad experience of warm, non-judgmental, inspiring Judaism.

Our partnership drive is still in full swing and we welcome & encourage your participation! Our doors are always open and our congregants include all families from every conceivable segment of the Jewish community: Conservative, Orthodox, Reform, Sefardi, Ashkenazi, observant and unaffiliated.

Click here to download our Partnership/Membership Form or click here to see what we offer. Forms can be mailed to us, 74 Maple Avenue, Cedarhurst NY 11516 or faxed to 516-295-7840. We look forward to formally welcoming you aboard in the very near future.

On Rosh Hashanah, hundreds of angels eagerly wait for one Jew to speak some honest praise about another. Because they know well how much the One Above yearns to hear His children's praise

The Parshah In a Nutshell
Parshat

The greater part of the Torah reading of Haazinu ("Listen In") consists of a 70-line "song" delivered by Moses to the people of Israel on the last day of his earthly life.

Calling heaven and earth as witnesses, Moses exhorts the people to "Remember the days of old / Consider the years of many generations / Ask your father, and he will recount it to you / Your elders, and they will tell you" how G‑d "found them in a desert land", made them a people, chose them as His own, and bequeathed them a bountiful land. The Song also warns against the pitfalls of plenty: "Yeshurun grew fat, and kicked / You have grown fat, thick, and waddled/ He forsook G‑d who made him / And spurned the Rock of his salvation" — and the terrible calamities that would result, which Moses describes as G‑d "hiding His face". Yet in the end, he promises, G‑d will be avenge the blood of His servants and be reconciled with his people and land.

The Parshah concludes with G‑d's instruction to Moses to ascend the summit of Mount Nebo, from which he beheld the Promised Land before dying on the mountain. "For you shall see the land opposite you; but you shall not go there, into the land which I give to the children of Israel."

Daily Thought
Our Father, Our King

Rosh Hashanah, the Baal Shem Tov taught, is a game of hide and seek. G‑d hides, we seek.

But where can G‑d hide? Wherever you go, there He is. As the Zohar says, "There is no place void of Him." So perhaps what the Baal Shem Tov meant is more like peek-a-boo — when the parent hides behind his or her own fingers. So too, G‑d hides within the guise of an awesome, indifferent king, judging His subjects strictly by the book until the most sublime angels shiver in dread.

And we seek. We seek the father within the stern voice. We are the small child who climbs into the king's arms, tears off the mask and says, "Daddy!"

Which is just what he was waiting for.
