A Word From the Rabbi

It's not too late to make reservation for Chabad's annual women's luncheon and this year we've made it easier than ever with the ability to register online - just a click away! Each year, the women of our community eagerly anticipate Chabad's Annual Women's Luncheon for its perfect combination of fun and enlightenment. This year will exceed these high expectations with workshops and refreshments, a catered lunch, and a musical performance by international singer & composer, Mrs. Rivkah Gutnick.

The highlight of Chabad's annual women's luncheon, to be held on Nov. 12, will be a special talk by our featured guest speaker, Ms. Lauri Zimmet. Following lunch, she will speak about Torah, the Naval Reserves and the Art of Survival. Ms. Zimmet serves in the Naval Reserves and was on active duty in Iraq, Kuwait and Saudi Arabia. In this stirring lecture, Ms. Zimmet will discuss her unique perspective on participating first hand in the liberation of the Iraqi people. She shares details about her role in the war and what steps she took as a Jew to ensure her safety while at the same time conducting a Pesach seder and leading torah discussions. She also tells of her constant communications with her Chabad Rabbi, and a riveting account of her first Shabbat - a clandestine experience of lighting candles and saying kiddush in secret so as to go undetected by the Saudis who surrounded her dwelling.

This elegant event, celebrating the Week of the Jewish Woman, will be held at the Ohr Torah Ballroom, 410 Hungry Harbor Rd, North Woodmere, next Sunday, November 12th, 10:00 am - 2:30 pm. Workshops & Chinese Auction Viewing: 10:00 - 12:00; Luncheon & Concert: 12:30 - 2:30 pm.

Please visit our website to view the magnificent invitation or to place your reservation www.chabad5towns.com/luncheon. To make your reservation by phone, call 516-295-2478. Respond today - you'll be glad you did!

Best wishes for a Shabbat Shalom,
Rabbi Zalman Wolowik

Daily Quote
A voice is heard on high, lamentation, bitter weeping; Rachel weeping for her children, she refuses to be comforted for her children, for they are not. So says the L-rd: Refrain your voice from weeping and your eyes from tears, for there is reward for your work, says the L-rd, and they shall come back from the land of the enemy...

A Small Candle

You don't need to move mountains. You just have to know where to aim. You can transform an entire family forever just with one Shabbat candle of one little girl.

The Parshah In a Nutshell
Parshat Lech-Lecha

G‑d speaks to Abram, commanding him to "Go from your land, from your birthplace and from your father's house, to the land which I will show you." There, G‑d says, he will be made into a great nation. Abram and his wife Sarai, accompanied by his nephew Lot, journey to the Land of Canaan, where Abram builds an altar and continues to spread the message of a One G‑d.

A famine forces the first Jew to depart for Egypt, where beautiful Sarai is taken to Pharaoh's palace; Abram escapes death because they present themselves as brother and sister. A plague prevents the Egyptian king from touching her and convinces him to return her to Abram and compensate the brother-revealed-as-husband with gold, silver and cattle.

Back in the Land of Canaan, Lot separates from Abram and settles in the evil city of Sodom, where he falls captive when the mighty armies of Chedorlaomer and his three allies conquer the five cities of the Sodom Valley. Abram sets out with a small band to rescue his nephew, defeats the four kings, and is blessed by Malki-Zedek the king of Salem (Jerusalem).

G‑d seals the Covenant Between the Parts with Abram, in which the exile and persecution (Galut) of the people of Israel is foretold and the Holy Land is bequeathed to them as their eternal heritage

Still childless ten years after their arrival in the Land, Sarai tells Abram to marry her maidservant Hagar. Hagar conceives, becomes insolent toward her mistress, and then flees when Sarai treats her harshly; an angel convinces her to return and tells her that her son will father a populous nation. Ishmael is born in Abram's 86th year.

Thirteen years later, G‑d changes Abram's name to Abraham ("father of multitudes") and Sarai's to Sarah ("princess"), and promises that a son will be born to them; from this child, whom they should call Isaac ("will laugh"), will stem the great nation with which G‑d will establish His special bond. Abraham is commanded to circumcise himself and his descendents as a "sign of the covenant between Me and you."
