A Word From the Rabbi

While the tragedy at the Virginia Tech University shocked us, as human beings, the world over, we as a Jewish community in particular mourn the loss of one of our own, Professor Libeu Libresco, a Romanian Holocaust survivor who was murdered while courageously saving his students from certain death.

60 years after being liberated from Bergen Belsen, he chose to give up his life so that others could continue to enjoy theirs. His Kiddush Hashem, sanctification of G‑d's name was noticed by people the world over and even U.S. President George W. Bush.

May his family find solace and comfort in the knowledge that their father's moment of death was the ultimate expression of life.

A Chabad Center dedicated to his memory will be established at Virginia Tech and will perpetuate his legacy of sacrificing one's life for the sake of another. If you would like to join the global campaign of Mitzvot in his memory your Mitzva will be presented to the Students at the University.

Every week Professor Libresco would remind his wife of the appropriate time to light the Shabbat candles. This week, as she lights them alone, let us light those beautiful candles in his memory together with her. Candle lighting time tonight is at 7:21 pm.

The Lubavitcher Rebbe of righteous memory would always teach us to transform darkness to light, pain into action. This week is an especially opportune time to increase in acts of goodness and kindness. Let us light and encourage others to light those beautiful Shabbat candles, thus dispelling a little bit of the darkness in our world.

Best wishes for a Shabbat Shalom,
Rabbi Zalman Wolowik

The Purpose

There are infinite worlds beyond ours and beyond the worlds of the angels, all full of divine light, beauty and oneness.

But know also that all this was brought into being with a single purpose: G‑d desires to be at home within your mundane world.

The Parshah In a Nutshell
Parshat Tazria-Metzora

The Parshahs of Tazria and Metzora continue the discussion of the laws of Tumah v'Taharah, ritual impurity and purity.

A woman giving birth should undergo a process of purification, which includes immersing in a mikvah (a naturally gathered pool of water) and bringing offerings to the Holy Temple. All male infants are to be circumcised on the eighth day of life.

Tzaraat ("leprosy") is a supra-natural plague, which can afflict people as well as garments or homes. If white or pink patches appear on a person's skin (pink or greenish in garments or homes), a Kohen is summoned. Judging by various signs, such as an increase in size of the afflicted area after a seven-day quarantine, the Kohen pronounces it tameh (impure) or tahor (pure).

A person afflicted with tzaraat must dwell alone outside of the camp (or city) until he is healed. The afflicted area in a garment or home must be removed; if the tzaraat recurs, the entire garment or home must be destroyed.

When the metzora ("leper") heals, he or she is purified by the Kohen with a special procedure involving two birds, spring water in an earthen vessel, a piece of cedar wood, a scarlet thread and a bundle of hyssop.

Ritual impurity is also engendered through a seminal or other discharge in a man, and menstruation or other discharge of blood in a woman, necessitating purification through immersion in a mikvah.
