A Word From the Rabbi

If you'll be joining us for services at Chabad this Shabbos, you'll notice a beautiful new addition to our lobby. The addition is unfortunately not space, rather it's a large Mitzvah Campaign Board featuring various brochures on various mitzvos that the Rebbe urged people to take on, such as tefillin, kosher, charity, family purity etc. Feel free to stop by our center at any time and pick up any or all of the brochures to learn more about these campaigns. We extend many thanks to Moshe & Judy Susman for sponsoring this welcome addition to our lobby, in honor of their children.

Amongst the brochures on the board, we've also added a row to feature publications and postcards on our ongoing and upcoming events. In the spotlight this month is our Art & Soul Event! I'm sure by now you received the beautiful invitation and I hope you will be joining
us on August 6th for an evening of elegance and entertainment under the stars: Art Show & Auction with world renowned Artist, Michoel Muchnik. The Art & Soul evening will be held at the home of Andrew & Elyse Goldstein, 99 Willow Road, Woodsburgh, New York; 7:30 pm. $18 Covert • Sushi Bar & Drinks. A sale and exhibit of the artist's array of awe-inspiring masterpieces will benefit our Chabad Center. To RSVP and for more information please call 295-2478 or visit www.ChabadFiveTowns.com.

Best wishes for a Shabbat Shalom,
Rabbi Zalman Wolowik

Camp Gan Israel Update!

From the Head Counselors Desk...

Fantastic, friendly and fun are just a few ways to describe our Ahavas Yisroel themed week here at Camp Gan Israel! Our week started off with nature and a special Tisha B'av Story Time. We were all so sad when we learned about the destruction of the Beis Hamikdosh. We really missed everyone on Tuesday, but back in camp on Wednesday we got right into the swing of things with an amazing Drum Tales presentation. We all used drums to go on a "journey" and "adventure" through Africa. We ran, walked, swam, galloped and had a great time banging on the drums!

Did you see that gigantic water slide at camp? It sure was a hit on Thursday as we cooled off by slipping, sliding and splashing away! Thursday was also dress up day...it was hard to tell who was who with all those twins running around camp! Friday finishes off another super week at Camp Gan Israel!

Daily Quote
"Love your fellow as yourself" (Leviticus 19:18) is an elaboration and elucidation upon "And you shall love the L-rd your G‑d" (Deuteronomy 6:5). When one loves one's fellow one loves G‑d, for one's fellow contains within him/herself a "part of G‑d above" (Job 31:2). By loving one's fellow, the innermost part of him, one loves G‑d.
— Rabbi Israel Baal Shem Tov

Parshah
The Inexistence of the Universe
A fundamental principle of the Jewish faith — twice stated by Moses in our Parshah — is that "there is none else": that nothing exists aside from G‑d. Are these just words, or do they mean something that we can understand? Seven generations of Chabad rebbes, beginning with the author of the Tanya, have written on the subject

Daily Thought
A Paradox

It's a paradox: The greatest revelations are to be found not in meditation, study and prayer, but in the mundane world —but only if you would rather be meditating, studying and praying.

From the wisdom of the Lubavitcher Rebbe, Rabbi Menachem Schneerson; words and condensation by Tzvi Freeman. To order Tzvi's book, "Bringing Heaven Down to Earth, click here.

the parshah in a nutshell
Parshat Va'etchanan

Moses tells the people of Israel how he implored G‑d to allow him to enter the land of Israel, but G‑d refused, instructing him instead to ascend a mountain and see the Promised Land.

Continuing his "review of the Torah," Moses describes the Exodus from Egypt and the Giving of the Torah, declaring them unprecedented events in human history. "Has there ever occurred this great thing, or has the likes of it ever been heard? Did ever a people hear the voice of G‑d speaking out of the midst of the fire... and live? ... You were shown, to know, that the L-rd is G‑d... there is none else beside Him."

Moses predicts that, in future generations, the people will turn away from G‑d, worship idols, and be exiled from their land and scattered amongst the nations; but from there they will seek G‑d, and return to obey His commandments.

Our Parshah also includes a repetition of the Ten Commandments, and the verses of the Shema which declare the fundamentals of the Jewish faith: the unity of G‑d ("Hear O Israel: the L-rd our G‑d, the L-rd is one"); the mitzvot to love G‑d, study His Torah, and bind "these words" as tefillin on our arms and heads, and inscribe them in the mezuzot affixed on the doorposts of our homes.
