A Word From the Rabbi

With just three weeks remaining until the third annual National Jewish Retreat at the luxurious Canyons Resort in Park City, Utah, final arrangements are falling into place to become the best season ever. Just take a look at some of the highlights at this year’s retreat which will feature a faculty of twenty world-class scholars offering over 80 programming choices to meet a wide variety of learning interests.

One of the most prominent members of the panel will be Rabbi Eli Silberstein, Chabad Shliach in Ithaca, NY and the university’s Jewish Chaplain since 1984. Rabbi Silberstein has taught Talmudic Law at Cornell University for over 10 years. A distinguished scholar in Jewish Law with particular interest in the intersection of its legal and mystical dimensions, he has authored a number of courses for the JLI including the spring 2008 course, Talmudic Ethics.

And among the many other stimulating presenters at this year’s Retreat, the Governor of Utah, Hon. Jon M. Huntsman Jr. as well as Attorney General Mark Shurtleff will deliver greetings during dinner, followed by a keynote address by Rabbi Moshe Kotlarsky. The Attorney General will partake in a session at the Retreat, as well, where Talmudic law will be analyzed in light of the American legal system.

The resort is in a breathtakingly beautiful location with first class accommodations. Guests will be able to explore the natural setting, enjoy the on-site recreational activities, and network with faculty and other program participants. The National Jewish Retreat will be held July 2-6. For further information and to make reservations, visit www.jretreat.com or call 1-877-JRetreat.

Best wishes for a Shabbat Shalom,

Rabbi Zalman Wolowik

Daily Thought
Retroactive Liberation

Before I had even started school, a picture of liberation was already forming in my mind. Such a liberation, and in such a way, that it would truly make sense of all the suffering, all the oppression and persecution we have undergone.

It is not that there will be no more darkness, no more suffering, that those things shall cease to exist. It will be such an essence-light that darkness itself will become light —-even the darkness and suffering of the past. (from a letter by the Rebbe)

the parshah in a nutshell
ParshatShlach

Moses sends twelve spies to the Land of Canaan. Forty days later they return, carrying a huge cluster of grapes, a pomegranate and a fig, to report on a lush and bountiful land. But ten of the spies warn that the inhabitants of the land are giants and warriors "more powerful than we"; only Caleb and Joshua insist that the land can be conquered, as G‑d has commanded.

The people weep that they'd rather return to Egypt. G‑d decrees that Israel's entry into the Land shall be delayed forty years, during which time that entire generation will die out in the desert. A group of remorseful Jews storm the mountain on the border of Land and are routed by the Amalekites and Canaanites.

The laws of the menachot (meal, wine and oil offerings) are given, as well as the mitzvah to consecrate a portion of the dough (challah) to G‑d when making bread. A man violates the Shabbat by gathering sticks and is put to death. G‑d instructs to place fringes (tzitzit) on the four corners of our garments so that we should remember to fulfill the mitzvot (Divine commandments).
