A Word From the Rabbi

Dear Friend,

Registration is quickly filling up for our upcoming Jewish Learning Institute course on the charged topic of "The Messiah Mystery: Toward a Perfect World." This stimulating 8-week course takes place on Wednesday evenings at the Chabad Center, beginning May 11th, 8:15 - 9:30 pm.

No idea in human history has inspired so much hope or ignited so much debate. It is the dream that has motivated prophets, poets, sages and mystics. It is the basis for the beliefs of billions across the globe. What is this Jewish ideal, Mashiach, the Messiah? Where is its source? When did it become so important to Judaism? Why? How is it relevant to the here and now?

These questions - as well as many others - will be addressed in the eight lessons, and students will come away with a deep and profound understanding of Judaism's inexorable yearning for a perfect world. Join us to discover answers and insight on this charged topic. I know you will enjoy this highly interactive and extremely fascinating course and I hope you will accept my invitation to join me on this journey. For further information and registration, please log on to www.myjli.com or call us at 516-295-2478.

Best wishes for a Shabbat Shalom & a Good Chodesh,

Rabbi Zalman Wolowik
Director

The Parshah In a Nutshell
Parshat Kedoshim

The Parshah of Kedoshim begins with the statement: "You shall be holy, for I, the L-rd your G‑d, am holy"; this is followed by dozens of mitzvot (Divine commandments) through which the Jew sanctifies him or herself and relates to the holiness of G‑d.

These include: the prohibition against idolatry, the mitzvah of charity, the principle of equality before the law, Shabbat, sexual morality, honesty in business, honor and awe of one's parents, the sacredness of life.

Also in Kedoshim is the dictum which the great sage Rabbi Akiva called a cardinal principle of Torah and of which Hillel said, "This is the entire Torah, the rest is commentary" — Love your fellow as yourself.

Daily Thought
Soul Healing

People think that if they are not well, they must sacrifice all meaning in their life in order to take care of their physical situation. In fact, the opposite is true: You cannot separate the healing of the body from the healing of the soul. As you treat the body, you must also increase in nourishing the soul. Doctors know this very well, but they should make better use of the fact.
