A Word From the Rabbi

Dear Friends,

In an effort to facilitate open lines of communication within our community, it is important for individuals to be well-informed about the programs, needs and concerns of the community as a whole. The Five Towns Jewish Community e-mail group is a wonderful network of 1600 members who receive daily notifications from all the shuls in our area regarding programs, classes and services offered to our community at large.

This free e-mail group as well as the Five Towns Jewish Shuls e-group, has the potential to reach thousands of participants and can be more useful to the community at large if membership enrollment is increased. I urge you to subscribe to these worthwhile email group lists. Joining the e-community is as easy as sending a blank e-mail to [email protected] and [email protected]. For further info on both email groups, visit www.chabad5towns.com/ftjc.

There have been requests to begin a second Shacharit minyan at 7:15 am at the Chabad Center (in addition to the 6:30 am Minyan.) We'll begin as soon as we have 20 commitments. If this time works for you, please email or call us with your name and phone number or email and we'll contact you as soon as we're ready to start. Email: [email protected] or call 516-295-2478 ext. 10.

Best wishes for a Shabbat Shalom,
Rabbi Zalman Wolowik

Happening at Chabad this week

This Kiddush luncheon at the Chabad Center this week is sponsored by Wendy and David Friend in memory of David's father, Reb Shlomo B"R Yitzchak and in honor of their children's graduations, Matthew from college, and Alexia from High School. If you'd like to sponsor a future Kiddush at the Chabad Center in honor or in memory of a family member or friend, please contact Dr. Muller at 516-569-0169.

Take a walk down memory lane as we wrap up this year's highlights at Chabad! All women are welcome to join for an interactive, insightful workshop on Tuesday, May 31st, 8:15 pm at Chabad. Mrs. Bassie Kalmenson, an organizational expert and president of "Be organized," will speak about compartmentalizing our lives and making room for our future. Suggested donation: $10; refreshments will be served.

Chabad's Shavuot Family Tea is around the corner… and we need your help! Choose a time to join us for a fun baking session and create your favorite pareve dessert to grace our lavish vienesse! Of course, we'll also include your delicious dessert recipes in our future cookbook, "The Kosher Table." If you can't join us for baking but would like to participate, we are also in need of sponsors! Please contact Fabiana at 516-569-2278 or Rosalie at 516-374-7870 to schedule a baking time at our Chabad kitchen or to discuss sponsorships. Baking sessions will take place Wednesday, June 8th: 7:30 - 8:30 pm and 8:30 - 9:30 pm. Thursday, June 9th: 10:00 - 11:00 am and 11:00 am - 12:00 pm; Thursday evening, 7:30 - 8:30 pm and 8:30 - 9:30 pm.

On behalf of all the men who enjoyed the invigorating Pesach Sheini farbrengen this past week, we thank R' Yanky Feder for hosting the farbrengen in his home.

In the Spotlight: MISSION POSSIBLE
Display your solidarity for Israel by visiting. And learning. And playing. And shopping. Visiting Israel the Chabad way means that you will see more than Masada and the Kotel. From July 11th through July 22nd 2005, Chabad of the Five Towns will partner with Chabad at Flamingo, Toronto to bring you an Israel experience unlike any other.

The trip begins at the center - a tour of the Old City and the Kotel. By Days 2-3, the lucky tourists will continue on a whirlwind tour of sites and sounds unique to Chabad trips: a minyan with Moshe Katzav, President of Israel, a visit to Kfar Chabad complete with its Etrog orchard and replica of Lubavitch World Headquarters in Brooklyn, an archeological dig at Beit Guvrin, a presentation from the Jerusalem Reclamation Project along with a tour of the neighborhoods they have changed from Muslim to Jewish. After spending a meaningful Shabbat in Jerusalem, the trip will move on to Chevron and Bethlehem to view the core spiritual yet too often skipped sites of the Maarat Hamachpelah (cave where Adam, Eve, Abraham, Sarah, Isaac, Rebeccah, Jacob and Leah are buried) and Kever Rachel (tomb of Rachel, our mother).

Can you believe that anyone can see all of this in less than one week? Continue...

Teen Talk

Chabad's Teen Talk members enjoyed an exciting trip this past Sunday. In culmination of this year's teen activities, members spent a day in Crown Heights visiting the new, incredible Jewish children's museum, and took a tour down Kingston Avenue with a surprise destination… the ice cream store! The teens also had the unique opportunity to say some chapters of Tehillim in the Lubavitcher Rebbe OBM's personal study. What an inspiring experience! The trip concluded with a sumptuous dinner at Mendy's eatery in the Museum building.

We extend much appreciation to our devoted, creative club leaders, Esti & Temma who have made this year a most memorable ones for so many our youth!
Thank You!!!

Living in the Future
It's my favorite oxymoron: If one indeed lives in the future, it's not the future anymore, is it? And if one only thinks he's living in the future, than he's not really living there, is he?

What's A 'Hassid,' Anyway?
"The Hassids are the ones with the black coats..."
"No, no. All the Orthodox have long black coats and beards. The Hassids are the ones with the wide-brimmed hats."

A Wild Idea
Marriage is a pretty bizarre concept. It must have been G‑d's idea. Who else could think of such a whacky plan like bringing together two opposites and putting them under one roof to share a life?

The Parshah In a Nutshell
Parshat Bechukotai

G‑d promises that if the people of Israel will keep His commandments, they will enjoy material prosperity and dwell secure in their homeland. But He also delivers a harsh "rebuke" warning of the exile, persecution and other evils that will befall them if they abandon their covenant with Him.

Nevertheless, "Even when they are in the land of their enemies, I will not cast them away; nor will I ever abhor them, to destroy them and to break My covenant with them; for I am the L-rd their G‑d."

The Parshah concludes with the rules on how to calculate the value of different types of pledges made to G‑d.

Daily Thought:

Fur Coats & Furnaces
Have you ever heard of the "Saint in a Fur Coat"? He sits in his house by a fireplace full of wood. But there is no fire. The house, and everyone in it are shivering from the cold. All except for him. He dons a fur coat and he is warm.

So we ask him, "Why do you warm only yourself? Why not kindle the wood in your fireplace and warm others as well?"

He answers, "It is not just this house. The entire world is struck with a bitter, cold wind. Do you expect me to warm up an entire world?"

So we tell him that he does not have to warm up the entire world. But perhaps he could warm up one other individual. Perhaps two. Perhaps he could warm up one little corner of the world.

"For a person such as I," he replies, "it is not fitting to warm up only one corner." And so there he sits, in his cold, dark house, all comfy in his fur coat.
