A Word From the Rabbi

The first days of Pesach at Chabad have been truly beautiful!! All who attended the Seder had a most enjoyable and meaningful experience and many had the opportunity to share a thought in connection with the Seder. People from all walks of life have been attending services and we welcome your participation throughout the remainder of the Holiday.

Scores of men and women are expected to participate in the Moshiach Seudah on the last day of Pesach and I invite you to join! No reservations necessary - read further for event details.

Best wishes for a Shabbat Shalom and a Happy and Kosher Passover,
Rabbi Zalman Wolowik

Jewish Learning Institute

Unlike traditional history courses where students focus on dates, names, and events, Flashbacks in Jewish History looks beneath the surface at what history means to the Jews as a people. This exciting new course will be offered at Chabad of the Five Towns for 6 Wednesday, starting April 25. The course costs $99, which includes a beautiful student textbook, but if you register before April 13, you can take advantage of our early bird special and receive a 10% discount.

The course touches the heart, as students are shown that history is about people just like them, with hopes, dreams, and challenges. What can you gain by taking this course? A chance to discover where you came from and how you survived countless persecutions to get here. A chance to experience the wonder of Jewish survival and reflect back on the past. A chance to face the future with renewed hope and inspiration. And an opportunity to learn the secrets that will help make that future brighter and more meaningful. Register online: http://www.myjli.com/ or call 516-295-2478.

Daily Thought
Seeing Miracles

Why did miracles happen in Egypt? Because we believed they would. Those who didn't believe in miracles saw only plagues.

The Parshah In a Nutshell
Parshat

On the eighth day following "seven days of inauguration," Aaron and his sons begin to officiate as Kohanim (priests); a fire issues forth from G‑d to consume the offerings on the Altar and the Divine Presence comes to dwell in the Sanctuary.

Aaron's two elder sons, Nadav and Avihu, offer a "strange fire before G‑d, which He commanded them not" and die before G‑d. Aaron is silent in face of his tragedy. Moses and Aaron subsequently disagree as to a point of law regarding the offerings, but Moses concedes to Aaron that Aaron is in the right.

G‑d commands the kosher laws, identifying the animal species permissible and forbidden for consumption. Land animals may be eaten only if they have split hooves and also chew their cud; fish must have fins and scales; a list of non-kosher birds is given, and a list of kosher insects (four types of locusts).

Also in Shemini are some of the laws of ritual purity, including the purifying power of the mikvah (a pool of water meeting specified qualifications) and the wellspring. Thus the people of Israel are enjoined to "differentiate between the impure and the pure."
