A Word From the Rabbi

It's been a truly joyous Holiday here at Chabad and we thank the many individuals who coordinated and sponsored our Shavuot events.

As we prepare our calendar for the coming year, we'd like to present you with an opportunity to be an integral part of Chabad's programs and events. Chabad hosts Women's Circle gatherings every Rosh Chodesh and various farbrengens for men throughout the year. Such events are generally hosted by people like you, within our community. If you'd like to reserve a date to host a farbrengen in your home, or one of our 20+ select dates from September 2008 through June 2009, please contact Chanie with your preferences or to discuss your options - [email protected].

Also stay tuned for advertising options and forms for submitting your family's dates for inclusion in our calendar. Sharing each other special dates brings us closer as family. Look out for this information in the mail in the coming week; forms will also be posted on our website shortly.

Best Wishes for a Shabbat Shalom

Rabbi Zalman Wolowik

Daily Quote
Our Rebbe revives the dead. What is a corpse? Something cold and unfeeling. Life is movement, warmth, excitement. Is there anything as frozen in self-absorption, as cold and unfeeling as the mind? And when the cold-blooded mind understands, comprehends, and is excited by a G‑dly idea - is this not a revival of the dead?
— The disciples of Rabbi Schneur Zalman of Liadi

My Son's First Steps
On a recent Tuesday, my twelve-month old son started walking. I came home from a long day at work to see him waddling around the house as if he owned the place.

Daily Thought
Darkness Limited

Everything has its limits, even darkness.

As the Zohar says,
"When the world was made, a limit was set
how long it will function in confusion."

From the wisdom of the Lubavitcher Rebbe, Rabbi Menachem Schneerson, of righteous memory; words and condensation by Tzvi Freeman. To order Tzvi's book, "Bringing Heaven Down to Earth, click here.

the parshah in a nutshell
ParshatBehaalotecha

Aaron is commanded to raise light in the lamps of the menorah, and the tribe of Levi is initiated into the service in the Sanctuary.

A "Second Passover" is instituted in response to the petition "Why should we be deprived?" by a group of Jews who were unable to bring the Passover offering in its appointed time because they were ritually impure. G‑d instructs Moses on the procedures for Israel's journeys and encampments in the desert, and the people journey in formation from Mount Sinai, where they had been camped for nearly a year.

The people are dissatisfied with their "bread from heaven" (the manna) and demand that Moses supply them with meat. Moses appoints 70 elders, to whom he emanates of his spirit, to assist him in the burden of governing the people. Miriam speaks negatively of Moses and is punished with leprosy; Moses prays for her healing and the entire community waits seven days for her recovery.
