A Word From the Rabbi

Dear Name,

There's a spot for you at our Passover Seder! Whether you are a Seder veteran with answers to all four questions, or a curious explorer with forty questions of your own, the Chabad Seder offers a stimulating and satisfying experience. Chabad will be holding a Communal Seder, Saturday evening April 23, 8:30 pm at the Chabad Center. Adults and children are invited to join us for the Passover Seder of a lifetime - one you will never forget. Reservations can be made through our website or by calling: 516-295-2478.

If you have not yet sold your chametz, I urge you to do so soon! It is traditional not only to put your leavened products out of sight during Passover, but also to sell them through a Rabbi to a non-Jew. This is done in order to fulfill the commandment of not owning any Chametz on Passover. I can represent you in your sale of Chametz, if the form is received by April 21st. For your convenience, our "Sale of Chometz" form is now available online or at our office.

Best wishes to you and your family for a Kosher, happy and meaningful Passover!

Shabbat Shalom,
Rabbi Zalman Wolowik

Happening at Chabad this week

This evening, we commemorate the Shloshim, 30 days since the passing of Chief Simon Eisdorfer, R’ Chaim Shimon B”R Nosson Dov, our beloved congregant and founding member. Your participation at the Shloshim gathering tonight, April 14, 8:15 - 9:15 pm will be most meaningful to the Eisdorfer family and to all at Chabad. The gathering will be held at the Chabad Center, 74 Maple Avenue, Cedarhurst. Light refreshments will be served.

On Wednesday, April 20th, the 11th day of Nissan, we celebrate the birthday of the Lubavitcher Rebbe, OBM. To commemorate this auspicious day, Chabad will be holding a Farbrengen for men on Tuesday, April 20th, 8:15 pm. Farbrengens create a warm and vibrant sense of community and are an enjoyable and effective way to communicate Chassidic ideas & ideals. Join us for a Chassidic evening, 8:15 pm - location to be announced.

The tradition of praying at the resting place of the righteous is an integral part of Jewish life. In honor of the Rebbe's birthday, Chabad will be leading a community trip to the Ohel on Wednesday, April 20, 8:15 pm. - don't miss this opportunity! If you wish to join, please call us at 516-295-2478.

In the weeks preceding Passover it is customary to assist needy families by providing them with monetary aid, enabling them to purchase all the Holiday necessities. Chabad will be distributing funds to needy families in our community and especially to the family of a young father who underwent a lung transplant, which was thank G‑d successful. Due to the procedure, he has been unable to work and support his family for the last 6 months. Your contribution will directly aid this family and many others in the community, enabling them to have a joyous Passover with their needs provided for. Donations can be made online or by mailing your tax-deductible contribution to Chabad, 74 Maple Ave. Cedarhurst NY 11516.

Save the date! The Baal Shem Tov, founder of the Chassidic movement, established a tradition that on the last day of Pesach we eat a special meal, the Moshiach Seudah, complete with matza, wine and Chassidic songs. Rabbi Heshy Epstein, director of Chabad of S. Carolina, will lead the Seudah at Chabad of Five Towns on Sunday, May 1, 6:30 pm. All are welcome to join!

Gan Chamesh Preschool

As the children at Gan Chamesh explore the story of Pesach and the many customs and rituals of the holiday, their classrooms were transformed into laboratories where children could immerse themselves in sensory exploration. The sweet sounds of Ma Nishtana could be heard as you walk down the hall and the children could be seen busy at work creating their unique interactive Haggadas. The preschoolers' Pesach learning has been enhanced by their "Yetzias Mitzrayim Experience Fair", a trip to the Matza factory, a joint Model Seder and a fantastic Pesach music program by Mr. Alan Leiberman.

The Parshah In a Nutshell
Parshat Metzora

Last week's Parshah described the signs of the metzora ("leper") — a person afflicted by a spiritual malady which places him or her in a state of ritual impurity. This week's Torah reading begins by detailing how the recovered metzora is purified by the Kohen (priest) with a special procedure involving two birds, spring water in an earthen vessel, a piece of cedar wood, a scarlet thread and a bundle of hyssop.

A home can also be afflicted with "leprosy" by the appearance of reddish or greenish patches on its walls. In a process lasting as long a nineteen days, a Kohen determines if the house can be purified or it must be demolished.

Ritual impurity is also engendered through a seminal or other discharge in a man, and menstruation or other discharge of blood in a woman, necessitating purification through immersion in a mikvah.

Resiliance

Success, in the higher scheme of things, is when a soul that has alienated herself returns. It is the ultimate demonstration of her resilience and her depth: No matter how distant she may travel, in the end she can never tear herself away.
