A Timely Thought

Today, Friday, March 30, we celebrated the birthday of the Lubavitcher Rebbe, of righteous memory: 11 Nissan 5752 (1902) - 3 Tammuz 5754 (1994). It was the Rebbe’s tremendous and boundless love and care for every single Jew that is the driving force of the Chabad movement today and continues to touch and inspire Jews throughout the globe!

One hot Sunday afternoon in the summer of 1991, an elderly lady was patiently waiting her turn in the long line of Jewish women and girls from all walks of life, each one anticipating the moment of receiving the Rebbe’s blessing and dollar bill to be given to tzedakah.

When her turn finally arrived, this lady blurted out in her simple Yiddish, “Rebbe! I’ve been standing here for only an hour and I’m already exhausted. You have been standing here for hours and hours, and just look....!”

The Rebbe smiled gently and said, “When you are counting diamonds, you don’t get tired.”

Fast of the Firstborn

FAST OF THE FIRSTBORN:

It is an ancient and widespread custom for the firstborn to fast on the day before Passover. This commemorates the miracle which spared the firstborn Jewish sons from the plague which struck down the firstborn sons of the Egyptians.

In lieu of fasting, it is customary to arrange for a siyum to take place in the synagogue after morning prayers on the fourteenth of Nissan. The firstborn sons who are present participate in this festive meal and, having broken their fast, may continue to eat for the rest of the day.

A siyum will be held at Chabad, on Monday morning, April 2, at 7:00 am. All are welcome to participate!

Daily Thought
G‑d's Image

We were created in G‑d's image. Yet G‑d has no image.

Nevertheless, from a point before and beyond all things, G‑d looked upon a moment in time to be and saw there a soul, distant from Him in a turbulent world, yet yearning to return to Him and His oneness. And He saw the pleasure He would have from this union.

So He invested His infinite light into that finite image and became one with that image and in that image He created each one of us.

As for that moment He saw, that was the moment now.

The Parshah In a Nutshell
Parshat Tzav

G‑d instructs Moses to command Aaron and his sons regarding their duties and rights as Kohanim ("priests") who offer the korbanot (animal and meal offerings) in the Sanctuary.

The fire on the Altar must be kept burning at all times. In it are burned the wholly consumed Ascending Offering; veins of fat from the Peace, Sin, and Guilt Offerings; and the "handful" separated from the Meal Offering.

The Kohanim eat the meat of the Sin and Guilt Offerings and the remainder of the Meal Offering. The Peace Offering is eaten by the one who brought it, except for specified portions given to the Kohen. The holy meat of the offerings must be eaten by ritually pure persons, in their designated holy place, and within their specified time.

Aaron and his sons remain within the Sanctuary compound for seven days, during which Moses initiates them into the priesthood.
