Chabad of the Five Towns: Jewish Outreach and Education Community Center serving the Five Towns and Nassau County

A Word From the Rabbi

What an incredible evening that was!! The spirit and energy was palpable as over 600 guests entered the Grand Ballroom this past Sunday to join in celebrating Chabad's Bar Mitzvah Dinner.

The honorees and I are truly appreciative of all who made the effort to join us and are thankful to the many who submitted journal ads and contributions over the last several weeks. It's been most encouraging to see that our community and friends value and appreciate the vital work carried out by the Chabad Center and care enough to participate in a meaningful way. I would also like to express our overwhelming gratitude to the guests of honor, the dinner chairmen, committee and countless volunteers for their tireless efforts in making the dinner the tremendous success it was.

And with Purim coming up next Friday, I encourage you to participate in Chabad’s Purim Celebrations. There’s something for everyone, beginning with Thursday night’s multimedia megillah reading at 7:45 pm, continuing with numerous megillah readings throughout Purim and culminating with our annual Purim Feast on Friday night, this year themed, Purim in the Palace. Please see the detailed information below and we look forward to celebrating Purim with you!

Best wishes for a Shabbat Shalom and Freilechen Purim,
Rabbi Zalman Wolowik

Daily Quote
And there arose not a prophet since in Israel like Moses, whom G‑d knew face to face; [who equaled] all the signs and wonders, which G‑d had sent him to perform in the land of Egypt, to Pharaoh and all his servants, and to all his land; and all the strong hand, and all the great awe, which Moses performed before the eyes of all Israel

Moses' Birthday
What is the theme of Moses' life - and of his birthday, the Seventh of Adar? Moses is Torah. The entire Torah from beginning to end, even the new Torah insights revealed in subsequent generations, derive from what Moses received at Sinai. So the main thrust and initiative of this day is growth in Torah.

Daily Thought
Mystical & Practical

You cannot separate the mystical from the practical. Each thing has both a body and a soul, and they act as one. Neither can contradict the other, and in each the other can be found.

From the wisdom of the Lubavitcher Rebbe, Rabbi Menachem Schneerson; words and condensation by Tzvi Freeman. To order Tzvi's book, "Bringing Heaven Down to Earth, click here.

the parshah in a nutshell
Parshat Vayikra

G‑d calls to Moses from the Tent of Meeting, and communicates to him the laws of the korbanot, the animal and meal offerings brought in the Sanctuary. These include:

The "ascending offering" (olah) that is wholly raised to G‑d by the fire atop the Altar;

Five varieties of "meal offering" (minchah) prepared with fine flour, olive oil and frankincense;

The "peace offering" (shelamim), whose meat was eaten by the one bringing the offering, after parts are burned on the Altar and parts are given to the Kohanim (priests);

The different types of "sin offering" (chatat) brought to atone for transgressions committed erroneously by the High Priest, the entire community, the king, or the ordinary Jew;

The "guilt offering" (asham) brought by one who has appropriated property of the Sanctuary, who is in doubt as to whether he transgressed a divine prohibition, or who has committed a "betrayal against G‑d" by swearing falsely to defraud a fellow man.

This being the Shabbat before Purim, on which we celebrate the foiling of Haman the Amalekite's plot to destroy the Jewish people, the weekly Parshah is supplemented with the Zachor reading (Deuteronomy 25:17-19) in which we are commanded to remember the evil of Amalek and to eradicate it from the face of the earth.
