A Word From the Rabbi

With the onset of spring and Lag B’omer approaching, we are all a bit more lively and ready for some action! The entire community is invited to celebrate together on Thursday, May 22, 5:30 - 8:00 pm in Cedarhurst Park (corner Cedarhurst & Summit Ave.) at Chabad's Lag B'omer Festivities. We have fabulously fun activities, which include archery, bubble bonanza, mitzvah parade, races, tug-o-war, grand raffle and of course - a bonfire! This event is free of charge, food and refreshments are available for purchase and all are welcome!!!

During this time we remember the plague that killed 24,000 students of one of the greatest Jewish leaders, Rabbi Akiva, all of whom died in the short span between Passover and Shavuot. During those seven weeks between Passover and Shavuot, we commemorate this tragedy with a period of mourning. But on the 33rd day of the Omer, known as Lag B’omer, all expressions of mourning are suspended for this day is the anniversary of the passing of the mystic Rabbi Shimon bar Yochai, a surviving student of Rabbi Akiva, who requested that we rejoice on the day when his soul was reunited with its Creator.

We extend a big thank you to the Mayor, Honorable Andrew Parise and Village of Cedarhurst for allowing us to utilize the grounds of Cedarhurst Park and to Jeff (Yehudah) Neckonoff of Azamra DJ for providing the music for the event! We thank our co-sponsors, Dougies, Gourmet Glatt, Haskel Trading and Kosher World! Sponsorships are still needed so if you wish to help with expenses of this grand and only Lag B’omer community wide event, please call me at 516-295-2478.

Best wishes for a Shabbat Shalom,

Rabbi Zalman Wolowik

Counting Days
The Mitzvah of counting the Omer is to count the days from Passover until Shavuos, when the Omer offering was brought in the Temple. Each day has a purpose. Whether it leads up to the Omer offering or it is an ordinary day of life, we must look at the clock, and ask ourselves, “Am I using my time properly, to fulfill my mission in this world?”

Discoveries & Inventions

Everything was created as a means to know G‑d.

Every discovery we have ever made, each of our inventions, was planted here in the six days of creation in order that we utilize it for a G‑dly purpose.

the parshah in a nutshell
Parshat Behar

On the mountain of Sinai, G‑d communicates to Moses the laws of the sabbatical year. Every seventh year, all work on the land should cease, and its produce becomes free for the taking for all, man and beast.

Seven sabbatical cycles are followed by a fiftieth year — the jubilee year, on which work on the land ceases, all indentured servants are set free, and all ancestral estates in the Holy Land that have been sold revert to their original owners.

Behar also contains additional laws governing the sale of lands, and the prohibitions against fraud and usury.
